How does real laboratory experience translate into better software for scientists and lab managers? Few are better suited to answer this than Bin Yu, CEO of BTSOFT.

With a background spanning analytical chemistry, operational leadership, and software innovation, Bin has led BTSOFT to the forefront of laboratory informatics. Join us for a unique glimpse into Bin’s philosophy on innovation, his perspective on empowering labs with better tools, and how his experiences have shaped our software solutions.

How has your background shaped your approach as CEO of BTSOFT?

My professional journey began in the laboratory. With a background in chemistry and chemical engineering, I spent years working as an analytical chemist before becoming laboratory director. Those experiences allowed me to understand the laboratory environment from multiple perspectives—scientific work, operational management, and regulatory compliance.

Working with laboratory teams gave me a deep appreciation for the challenges labs face every day. This experience continues to shape my leadership at BTSOFT.

I believe laboratory software must be designed from the laboratory’s point of view, reflecting real workflows rather than forcing labs to adapt to rigid systems.

How did you identify the challenges that led to the creation of LIMS?

When I was managing laboratory operations, I realized many LIMS didn’t truly align with how laboratories function. Many were either too rigid or required extensive customization to support everyday lab workflows.

This gap inspired me to design and develop BTLIMS, which is our first-generation LIMS built on a client-server architecture. BTLIMS helped many laboratories manage data, streamline processes, and improve operational efficiency.

As technology continued to evolve, we developed our next-generation platform, ALPACA LIMS, which uses a modern browser-server architecture. This platform aligns with current technology trends and is designed to support the rapidly evolving landscape of cloud computing and artificial intelligence.

How does your scientific background inform your leadership and decision-making at BTSOFT?

Scientific training encourages structured thinking, logical problem-solving, and careful attention to detail. These principles are essential when developing systems that manage laboratory data and workflows.

Because I have worked both as a scientist and a laboratory director, I understand the importance of accuracy, traceability, and regulatory compliance. This perspective helps guide our team as we design solutions that balance technical reliability with practical usability.

What excites you most about being involved in both the technical development and business strategy of BTSOFT?

What excites me most is seeing how technology can directly improve the way laboratories operate. Designing and developing LIMS products that laboratories rely on every day is both challenging and rewarding.

When a laboratory can reduce manual work, improve efficiency, and gain better control of their data through our systems, it confirms that our work is making a real difference. Being able to contribute to that progress is something I feel both excited and fortunate to do.

What sets BTSOFT apart from other solutions in the lab management software space?

One of the most important differences is that our systems are designed from a true laboratory perspective.

As the designer of the system and someone who has spent many years working in laboratories, I focus strongly on the business logic behind laboratory operations.

My goal is for users to feel that the product reflects thoughtful design and deep professional experience.

When laboratories use our system, the workflow should feel intuitive and easy to understand. Users should be able to quickly step into their roles, supported by a clean and efficient interface, while still maintaining rigorous compliance features such as comprehensive audit trails.

If you could tell lab managers one key thing to consider when choosing a LIMS, what would it be?

Look beyond features and consider the philosophy behind the system.

A good LIMS should support the natural workflow of a laboratory rather than forcing laboratories to change the way they work. Laboratories evolve over time as methods, instruments, and regulatory requirements change, so flexibility and adaptability are critical when choosing a long-term system.

How do you spend your time outside of work?

I have always had a strong interest in the arts. Art teaches us to appreciate structure, balance, and attention to detail.

In many ways, I approach the design of a LIMS system as if I were creating a work of art. A well-designed system should have a clear structure, layered logic, and carefully refined details. I try to bring the same sense of craftsmanship and balance into the design of our products.

Outside of work, I enjoy listening to music, visiting art exhibitions, and spending time in nature. Many new ideas and inspirations often arise during these quiet and seemingly ordinary moments.

BTSOFT is excited to introduce you to Customer Service Manager Victoria Littlepage. Victoria’s experience, skillset, determination, and dedication to our organization make her an incredibly valued member of our team. That’s why we were excited to talk to Victoria about her background, what led her to BTSOFT, and what she experiences in her role here.

1. What is Your Educational and Career Background?

I got my Bachelor of Science Degree in Environmental Chemistry from Midwestern State University. After graduating, I worked as a laboratory and field technician and quickly moved up through Chemist IV and to Quality Assurance Manager. After several successful state audits and a LIMS implementation, I moved on to join BTSOFT and serve my former colleagues as BTSOFT’s new Customer Service Manager. As of December 1st, I have been with BTSOFT for 9 months and time has flown by! I have had the honor of working with some of the most diligent and compassionate people—both coworkers and customers.

2. What is Your Role at BTSoft and What Does it Entail?

We are a small company, so all of us wear many hats! My business card currently reads “Customer Service Manager.” What does that entail? Well, it entails keeping our customers happy and making sure we hold true to our promises. Some days may look like on-site visits with donuts and ALPACA goodies. On other days, it’s rushing to the airport at 4 AM to catch a flight across the country to carry out a LIMS implementation or spend 4 days at a resort for a trade show. Some of the days turn into nights and you find yourself on a Teams meeting at 12:30 AM with your BOD and the India Team, cracking up about your CEO’s impossibly driven work ethic. In a nutshell, if you’re on our team, you do it all.

3. What Inspired You to Pursue this Career?

I was scared. Plain and simple. I am a chemist, and stepping out of the laboratory was horrifying, but I’m so glad that I did. I was inspired by the team I would be joining. I had the pleasure of working alongside BTSOFT as I implemented BTLIMS into the laboratory I previously managed. Their energy, passion, and drive to constantly be better, do better, and make better inspired me to take a chance and make a change.

4. What Made You Choose BTSoft and What Drew You to This Company?

I saw firsthand what this software can do for a laboratory, and not just for the data but for the people. Like I said, I am a chemist, so I understand the challenges customers face when they don’t have the proper LIMS in place. Once BTLIMS was implemented at the lab, I could see the change in demeanor of the analysts, management, and customers. The tensions fell away and everyone was able to do their jobs better. I wanted to be a part of bringing this relief to as many of my fellow chemists as possible.

5. What Makes BTSoft Special?

Two things. We are always looking to exceed our own standards: good enough is never good enough. There is always room for improvement. On my first day, Bin Yu (CEO) told me, “Just keep doing the next right thing, that is how we succeed.” That really stuck with me, and I haven’t seen him falter from that mantra in the years I’ve known him.

As our customer, you can expect us to do what’s right. I love living by these truths in my work life because that’s the kind of person I want to be. Being part of a company that holds these values near and dear is endlessly refreshing.

6. What Do You Love to Do in Your Free Time?

Nature. Just be in it. I love the water, hikes, and camping. I have a huge collection of artifacts and different minerals that both my father and I have found along riverbeds and ancient waterways throughout our lifetimes. I also love to garden and host as many pollinators as I can throughout the spring and summer months. I enjoy studying the native flora here in Texas as well as anywhere new that I visit.

7. What is Something Unique About You That Few People Are Aware of?

My first profession during college was bartending. A whole different kind of chemistry. I miss my regulars all of the time, those guys and gals paid for my tuition, rent, and fun! But man am I glad that my customers these days aren’t intoxicated!
